Account book, 1795-1829.

David's accounts are dated 1794-1802. He recorded the names of his customers, the work he did for them, and the amounts he charged. There is no indication of how the accounts were settled. David made chairs of all sorts, including arm, kitchen, dining, rocking, small, high, great, and fan back. Sometimes the chairs were painted; favorite colors were red, blue, yellow, and green. He also made, mended, or painted a wide range of such other wooden items as bedsteads, saddles, hat blocks, button molds, clapboards, whiffletrees, wagons, yokes, bread shovels, desks, bridles, wooden balls, and mallets. Among Davids customers were printer Isaiah Thomas and Abel Stowell, a clockmaker in Worcester. Almost all the accounts record David's work, but some show his purchases of cloth, shoes, and sundries, as well as charges for making clothes. After David's death, his brother, Nathaniel, used this book to record the sale of wood and farm products, including livestock. Many of his accounts were with members of the Baptist church and his in-laws. He also recorded local deaths from 1811-1815, mentioning his first wifes passing on May 12, 1815. Nathaniel listed crops sown in 1809, noted the hiring of various workers, wrote in guardianship accounts for Albert William and Eunice Curtis, the children of Capt. Samuel Curtis, and included a "memorandum of Sophia's furniture," possibly done in 1812, when she married. The memorandum, or inventory, mentioned a bureau, chairs, a great wheel, gridiron, toaster, plates, and eating utensils. At some point, someone began to use the account book as a scrapbook; several poems and pictures are pasted on top of accounts. There are also some loose clippings laid in.
